10 Items Every 20-Something Needs in Her Wardrobe

I’ve recently been sifting through my closet to make way for some new clothing items that fit my healthier body. While doing so, I’ve realized there are items in there that I rarely wear, while there are staples I simply couldn’t live without. Below are 10 items I believe every 20-something needs in her wardrobe.

The statement jacket: It doesn’t matter if it’s printed faux fur for winter weather, a bright trench for spring, or a fierce textured motorcycle jacket for fall. Every 20-something needs a statement jacket in her closet, for an easy outfit pick-me-up and a simple means of dressing up a more reserved ensemble. This leopard-print option from Topshop (above) is something I wear on a surprisingly frequent basis, and it never fails to provide instant glamour.

A striped shirt: For a long time, I believed I couldn’t wear horizontal stripes because I’m on the shorter side, but I’m thrilled to report that’s an outdated myth, and that few things emphasize a feminine waistline as nicely as a striped shirt. Above are my three favourites: a black and camel crewneck from H&M, a black and white tissue-thin turtleneck from JCrew, and a grey and white long-sleeve tee with a splash of highlighter pink, also from JCrew.

Jeans that fit the bill (and the booty): It can require a lot of resilience to find the perfect pair of jeans, but there are so many options out there, you’re bound to find the right pair, if you just keep looking. I love this pair of “toothpick” jeans from JCrew – they fit so well, and are really comfortable. My JBrands are also a favourite of mine – probably the most flattering denim I’ve ever owned.

The little black dress: There’s a reason this is a classic; the right LBD is a very versatile item, as it can be worn to a job interview as easily as it can be worn out for drinks or dinner. It’s timeless and flattering, and while too many black dresses can make a wardrobe repetitive, no closet is complete without an LBD. This A-line option from Club Monaco is my current fave.

Silk camisole: This one is an absolute necessity. I love this white silk cami from Topshop, as it works underneath blazers and cardigans for work, and for more conservative events, but can be worn just as easily with denim shorts or a sultry skirt on warm summer nights.

Boyfriend jeans: I’m a big believer in boyfriend jeans. Whether it be brunch with the girls on Saturday morning, or grocery shopping late on Sunday evening, boyfriend jeans add a stylish edge to more casual outfits, and always make me feel like I’ve got a little bit of swagger. I love this light-wash pair from the Gap.

The pencil skirt: I’m a firm believer in the pencil skirt. No item makes me feel more like a powerhouse, and there are so many great options, it just comes down to finding the right length, colour and material for you. My two favourites are this black one from Banana Republic, and this asymmetrical tan and black option from Sugar & Scruff on Toronto’s Queen Street West.

The chambray shirt: It was a while before I saw the appeal of a chambray shirt, but when I tried on this one from Club Monaco, I instantly fell in love with this wardrobe staple. Less constrictive than a white dress shirt, but still structured enough to complete a polished look with the right accessories; a well-fitted chambray shirt is an absolute essential in my book now.

Pants that aren’t jeans: I feel as though it’s the mark of maturity as a woman when one finally owns a pair of pants that aren’t denim…or leggings…these Pixie Pants from JCrew are my current obsession; they always look polished and professional, without veering on the frumpy side, and they feel as comfortable as my Lululemons.

A night-out-on-the-town skirt: While it’s always great to have that reliable dress to grab for a night-out, I think there’s something to be said for a skirt that can be paired with a range of tops and shoes, and that makes you feel like a million bucks whether you’re sipping cocktails on a rooftop patio, popping champagne for a friend’s birthday, or tearing it up on the dance floor. My go-to is this ostrich feather mini from Club Monaco.
