Statement Staple

Who says a statement item can't be a wardrobe staple too? I believe that if you love something, you should strive to wear it as often as you can, and that not all clothing has to be plain and simple to be on frequent rotation in your life.

I found these pants last summer at Zara and immediately fell in love with them. At first I wore the pants only on nights out on the town, when I felt a bold statement pant was in order. Nevertheless, slowly but surely, I embraced these pantaloons as part of my casual weekend wardrobe, and as part of my work look. I soon discovered that it all came down to how I styled these bad boys, and that no matter how much of a statement piece your fave clothing item is, there's sure to be a variety of ways to wear it. You just have to experiment.

For a Night out on the Town

From head to toe: Topshop blouse, Zara pants, JCrew bracelet, Vintage clutch, Sam Edelman stiletto sandals

I'm not usually one for a top knot, simply because my hair is so thick that it often just looks like someone stuck a pumpernickle bagel to my scalp, but with Toronto in the midst of a heatwave, I've found myself swirling my hair up off my shoulders more often lately. When I wear these floral pants out at night, I'll generally wear a lightweight blouse like this one from Topshop, and a stiletto sandal. This vintage envelope clutch is one of my obsessions; its chestnut colour and scalloped edge make it the perfect accessory for so many outfits. I also love to break out the jewelery when I head out on the town, because I don't usually wear anything other than stud earings during the day, so this gold link bracelet from JCrew is my go-to.

For a Day at Work

From head to toe: Michael Kors blazer, H&M shirt, Zara pants, Dior sunglasses, Tory Burch satchel, Nine West pumps

To make these pants work-appropriate, I pair them with a navy blazer from Michael Kors, and a pair of classic black pumps from Nine West. I'll grab my Tory Burch satchel, as it fits everything I need for the office, and twirl my hair into a low bun at the nape of my neck. I also throw on my most sophisticaed sunnies, a pair of Dior cat-eyes, and mission accomplished: these sassy floral pants are now 100% work appropriate (perhaps not in very formal corporate settings, but hey, what are casual Friday's for?!).

For Weekend Brunch with the Girls

From head to toe: Joe Fresh aviators, Gap t-shirt, Kate Spade cross-body bag, Zara pants, Vince Camuto open-toe mules

For a laid-back weekend brunch, I pair these guys with a plain white t-shirt, aviators and open-toe mules. My hair is half-up here, but I always end up putting it down when I'm in a mellow mood. This outfit is the ideal thing to wear to brunch on a Saturday morning. It's not a look that takes maximal effort, but it doesn't scream hangover, either.

These pants are on the more summery side, so I'm trying to get as much wear out of them as I can before the weather turns. Stay tuned for more statement staples this fall!
