I had one of those weeks where everything seemed completely beyond my control. I'm always humbled when I encounter this perennial realization; so much of what happens in life is beyond our grasp. While I believe in going out and getting what you want, in making things happen for yourself, and in never giving up, I think it's also important to admit that sometimes, things simply happen, and there's nothing you can do but cope with the situation, make the best of it, and move on to something else. While I'm as existential as any twenty-something with a liberal arts degree, I can't help but adopt the quintessential deterministic mantra at times like these: everything happens for a reason.
Last night, one of my best friends knew I was feeling down, and sent me a video clip of an interview with Tavis Smiley, in which he quotes his mentor, Maya Angelou. The entire interview is inspiring, and worth watching if you have a spare moment, but this particular quotation has stayed with me and I wanted to share it here, with you.
Have a wonderful weekend. Stay inspired.
